The outstanding city of Plovdiv is the Bulgarian nomination for European Cultural Capital 2019

Plovdiv is officially the Bulgarian nomination for European Culture Capital 2019, local media report. Jury consisting of 13 remarkable international and Bulgarian experts in the field of Large Cultural Projects Management has chosen Plovdiv
among the four final Bulgarian nominations. The remaining finalists are
Varna , Veliko Turnovo and Sofia.
Delegates sent by the international jury, visited the participating cities from 29th August to 2nd September in order to get acquainted with the work and the preparation of the candidature on the spot.
The basic principles concerning the assessment of the proposed cultural programme by the participating cities are as follows: they should attract the attention of the citizens, the foreign tourists and enhance the European and Cultural collaboration.
The proposed programme should be sustainable, feasible and to promote the long-term cultural and social development of the city.Thus, 30 % of the funds allotted by the state for Plovdiv as a Bulgarian nomination for European Culture Capital 2019 will be distributed also for the remaining three nominated cities – Veliko Turnovo, Sofia and Varna. Initiatives set in the strategies of the remaining three participating cities are expected to be promoted.
Another country is going to nominate a city which will become the European Cultural Capital 2019. This is Italy where the winner will be selected among Cagliari, Lecce, Matera, Perugia, Ravena and Siena. The Italian winner will be announced in October.
After the jury announces the nomination of a Bulgarian city – cultural capital 2019, their proposal will enter the Ministry of Culture that should propose it to the European institutions. The proposal is anticipated to be officialized by means of a decision made by the ministers of culture during the regular conference of the EU Council in May this year.
